Action Needed on Recycling

May 18, 2004 12:55 PM

South Thanet Liberal Democrats have criticised Thanet Council for its poor record on recycling.

"Thanet Council has been slow to introduce a recycling scheme, despite the threat of an incinerator at Richborough", said Guy Voizey, Chairman of South Thanet Liberal Democrats. "Thanet Council's current recycling schemes are a wasted opportunity. There are plenty of efficient recycling schemes both in this country and in Europe. Thanet Council needs to expand the various doorstep recycling schemes to collect all recyclable materials. It then needs to persuade residents to recycle."

"More than ever before, people understand the need to recycle. The Council should make it as easy as possible to do so", said Mr Voizey.

"We all need to work together to protect our environment", said Councillor Trevor Emes. "We must try to reduce the amount of rubbish we produce. Thanet Council must support us, by making it as easy as possible to recycle our valuable natural resources. If we don't either reduce the quantity of waste we produce or increase the amount we recycle, the only alternative is incineration and pollution."
