There is currently a proposal to build a new, two storey Community Centre on the site of the wooden Park Hall in Pierremont Park. This will replace the facilities at Park Hall and The Retort House (the leisure centre in Albion Street Car Park).
The Broadstairs & St Peter's Community Centre Trust Ltd, has been set up to manage the project. The Liberal Democrats believe a new centre is needed. Young people need a place to go in the evenings. Community groups need a facility to use.
The Liberal Democrats want a number of questions answered.
A new Community Centre will only be build if the money can be raised. The Trust need local people to support the fundraising effort. We need to be confident the Centre will be available for all who need to use it. We also need to know it will be built in the best possible place. Too many questions remain unanswered over the current proposals.
We want a new Community Centre, but we want to make sure it will be a success. Many local people have legitimate concerns with this project.
The Liberal Democrats have written to the Chairman of the Trust and asked him to answer these important questions:
1. Who made the decision that Pierremont Park was the most suitable site upon which to build the proposed Community Centre?
2. What other sites have been considered?
3. What criteria were used to evaluate the potential sites?
4. Was consideration given to the environmental impact at all potential sites?
5. What criteria were used to select the members of the Broadstairs & St Peter's Community Centre Trust?
6. Are the Board Meetings open to the public?
7. Has the Trust received any financial pledges or guarantees from the Town Council, the District Council and/or County Council?
8. What is the projected final cost of a) building the hall, and b) fitting the hall?
9. How does the Trust propose to fund the building and operation of the Centre? Is it considering
borrowing funds and, if so, who will underwrite the repayment obligations?
