The Liberal Democrats will guarantee a basic income to all pensioners over 75 of at least £105.45 a week - £25 more than today (and this will be linked to earnings growth in the future). All pensioner couples over 75 will receive at least £160.95 a week - £33 more than today. This will be paid as a right - pensioners have paid for this already and deserve it. There will be no more demeaning means tests for pensioners over 75.
We will also provide free off-peak local transport for all pensioners and disabled people.
We will introduce free personal care for the elderly, as recommended by the Labour-appointed Royal Commission. "It is a scandal that older people are denied this care", said Guy Voizey, prospective Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for South Thanet. "In Scotland, where the Liberal Democrats have been in government, personal care is free. In England, where Steve Ladyman is the minister responsible, Labour has ignored the recommendations of the Royal Commission".
