As the number of school-age children falls in Thanet, the Labour government will put pressure on the Tory county council to shut local schools. At least two Thanet schools are under threat of closure.
Liberal Democrats see this as a chance to cut class sizes.
"This is an ideal opportunity to cut school class sizes and to give our young people the best possible education", said Guy Voizey, Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesman for South Thanet.
"We would also want any under-utilised buildings to be available for the community to use."
