A fun-packed programme of activities will be on offer at Thanet Fire Station's open day on Sunday 14th September in Margate Road, Broadstairs.
The event, with a community safety theme, takes place between 11am and 4pm and promises a full programme of fire and rescue demonstrations, informative displays and a wide range of fun activities for every age.
Entry is free and there will be a number of different displays throughout the day, including an inter-watch competition where Thanet will put their firefighting skills to the test in a complicated race to extinguish a house fire. Also on show will be a burning room that will show how quickly a domestic fire can develop and the dangers of not having a working smoke alarm. With accidental cooking fires still the main cause of fires in the home, visitors will be able to see the devastating effects of putting water on to a cooking oil fire, with chip pan fire demonstrator.
There will be a rescue dog display from Kent Fire and Rescue Service's Urban Search and Rescue Team. Fire crews will be recreating a serious car crash to encourage drivers and passengers to be responsible for their own and others' safety while driving and the specialist line-rescue team will be carrying out a high-rise rescue.
Plenty of attractions will be on offer for families including bouncy castles, face painting, sumo wrestling and much more.
Community safety officers will be on hand to discuss the benefits of having a free home safety visit, a service which includes fitting smoke alarms for free in homes across Kent. The visits take about 30 minutes and include tips on night-time routines, cooking safely with oil or fat, the dangers of smoking materials, care with candles, electrical safety and planning escape routes in the event of fire.
As part of its approach to Community Safety, Kent Fire and Rescue Service works closely with other partner agencies and key community groups, and there will be information available from many of these on the day.
Thanet Station Manager Peter Davis said: "We are really looking forward to the event and welcome the involvement of our partner agencies. Similar events in the area have proved very popular with visitors and this year promises to be a fun-packed and exciting day during which we will be getting a number of safety messages across to the community. We hope the event highlights our approach to create a safer community in the area."
Peter added: "Fire crews will also be on hand to wash peoples cars in an effort to raise vital funds for the Fire Fighters Charity (formally Fire Services Benevolent Fund) as part of the charity's National Car Wash day. We would encourage members of the local community to come and support us, and take advantage of the open day while getting a nice clean car!"
Refreshments, including a barbecue, will be available.
